Lecture by Professor Dr. Jörg Haspel in Sofia

Art in Buildings. Art in Urban Space. A Berlin Interim Balance on Post-War Heritage.

On November 29, 2023, Professor Dr. Jörg Haspel, Chairman of Board of Trustees of the German Foundation for Monument Protection (Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz), delivered a public lecture on the topic: “Art in Buildings. Art in Urban Space. A Berlin Interim Balance on Post-War Heritage.”

Prof. Haspel faced the challenging task of serving as the state curator for historical monuments in Berlin from 1992 to 1998, a period during which the new architectural identity of the modern German capital began to take shape. During the lecture, numerous examples of monumental facade art created after 1945 in East Berlin were showcased and discussed, highlighting their varying fates after 1989. Particularly intriguing were the examples of monuments that have been partially or entirely integrated through innovative architectural solutions into the contemporary landscape of unified Berlin. Some of the preservation and presentation solutions for Bulgarian monumental facade art undoubtedly draw inspiration from this shared experience.

The lecture attracted a large number of interested attendees, predominantly young architects, representatives of cultural heritage institutions, and others.
