The Mosaic as a Meaningful Element of the New Bulgarian Heritage. Condition, Problems, Expectations
Dr. Daniela Chulova-Markova
Dr. Daniela Chulova-Markova is an art historian, critic and expert evaluator. She defended her PhD on the problems of monumental wall art at the Institute for Art Research, BAS, 2004. She is a member of the “Critics” section of the Union of Bulgarian Artists, winner of the Award for Criticism in the competition for Young Artists, Critics and Curators, organized by the International Foundation of “St. St. Cyril and Methodius”. Over the years she has worked with the team of the State Gallery of Fine Arts, National Academy of Fine Arts, New Bulgarian University. Author of a large number of articles and studies in periodical and specialized press, in publications such as “LIK”, the magazine “Culture”, portal “Culture”, “Info SBH” and others. The subject of special interest are the problems of monumental wall art and urban environment, art management and art therapy. Daniela Chulova-Markova is the author of the books “The Unknown Ioan Leviev. Life and Creativity” (2008), “The Di Kiro Myth” (2009), “The 20th Century Monumental Wall Arts in Bulgaria, Europe and the World” (2008), “Visual Mythology of Mural Painting” (2009), “The Design of the 20th Century” (2013), “History of Art – Part 1” (2011), “History of Art – Part 2” (2016), “The Code of Child Drawings” (2017), etc.

PhD in art history and fine arts. From Veliko Tarnovo, teaches art in Gorna Oryahovitsa. His research interests focus on sgrafitto art and art in Bulgaria in the period 1947-1956.

Prof. Dr. Ivan Kabakov
Prof. Dr. Ivan Kabakov is a lecturer at the Department of History and Theory of Culture at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. He graduated in Cultural Studies (1996) and Law (2001) at the same university. He works in the field of management, cultural policies, cultural heritage, cultural rights, regional cultures and policies, legal and institutional infrastructure of culture, intellectual property and access to culture, culture and regional development, crafts and design, graffiti and urban development policies, professional development in the field of cultural heritage, and strategic management of culture.
He has taught at various universities in the disciplines of Cultural Management, Institutional Infrastructure of Culture, Law and Communication, Legal and Institutional Infrastructure of Cultural Heritage, Production and Approbation of Thematic Cultural Routes, Cultural Policy, “Strategic Dilemmas of Art Management” and “Integrated Management of Creative Development”, as well as the elective courses “Legal Infrastructure of Culture”, “Contractual Relations in the Field of Culture”, “European Cultural Policies”, “Intellectual Property in the Field of Culture” and “Cultural Competence”.
Ivan Kabakov is the author of “Ideas in management and cultural policies” (2014), “The graffiti in Sofia. Art/Marketing/Propaganda” (2019) and “Lawmaking and professional development in cultural heritage. Historical reconstruction and current conditions in Bulgaria” (2020). Co-author of the “Participation based model for management of historical-archaelogical reserve Sborianovo” (2021).
20th-century Mosaics in Georgia: policies & practices for preservation
Nini Palavandishvili
Freelance researcher and curator. Her research focuses on mid-century modernist architecture, monumental and decorative art, their role in at the time of their creation, and also their current interpretations.
She writes for international publications: SOS Brutalism, Park Books, 2017; is a (co)author and (co)editor of books: Building Socialist Georgia, Goethe Institut Georgia, 2022; Tbilisi-It’s Complicated, Onomatopee, 2019, and Art for Architecture – Georgia, Dom Publishers, 2019;
In collaboration with the Georgian National Committee of the Blue Shield, she worked on the conservation and adaptation plan for the Tbilisi Chess Palace and Alpine Club building (supported by the Getty Foundation’s “Keeping it Modern” program, 2018-2020).
From the Socialist to the Neo-avant-garde Mosaics. Issue of the New era Mural Heritage in Hungary
Dr. Brigitta Maria Kürtösi
She graduated as a painting-conservator at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, Budapest, in 2010. She carried out her post-graduate studies on Roman and Medieval excavated mosaic finds at the Doctoral School of the same institute. She has participated in conservation-restoration works of Roman and 20th centuries mosaics and wall paintings as freelancer. She works as an assistant professor there since 2016. Her teaching field is highly connected to her private practice and research interest, and it mostly focuses mosaics, other mural conservation/restoration problems, historical and modern techniques, and materials linked with them. She is involved in the international PhD program of Pázmány Péter Catholic University, Doctoral School of History in Budapest where she works with archaeology students on various topics related to history of mosaics.
Member of ICCM (International Committee for the Conservation of Mosaics), AIEMA (Association Internationale pour l’Étude de la Mosaïque Antique) and AIHV (Association International pour l’Histoire du Verre), she is in cooperation with SEE Mosaics (South-Eastern Europe Mosaics) Community.

Yevheniia Moliar is an art historian. Studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv. Works in the sphere of the cultural heritage from the Soviet period, in particular monumental art. Curated a project “SOVIET MOSAICS IN UKRAINE”. As a member of the self-organized initiative DE NE DE studies and preserves uncomfortable cultural heritage in the context of ideological shifts. Predoctoral fellow in The Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History in Rome.

Dr Alessandro Lugari
He began his activity with Studio Cassio, a shop which has been active in the capital since 1800, specializing in Ravenna (School for the rest of the mosaic). He designs and implements numerous works for public and private clients.
He received a degree in Technologies for conservation of cultural heritage at University of Tuscia in Viterbo and in Conservation of mosaics at School of conservation of Mosaics in Ravenna. He received a degree in Archaeology at University of Molise. Conservator specialized in ancient mosaics and sectilia with over 30 years of experience.
In 2001 started to work as a conservator at Opificio delle Pitre Dure di Firenze. In the last 20 years he worked in Soprintendenza Speciale per il Colosseo, il Museo Nazionale Romano e l Area Archeologica di Roma, where he directed several conservation projects about mosaics, stones and sectilia.
He is a founding partner of AISCOM (Italian association of study and conservation of ancient mosaics) in which is a member of the board. He is also a member of the board of ICCM (international committee of conservation of mosaics).
He is the founder of Pictor Imaginarius Association with which he organizes in the last twelve years an international prize of contemporary mosaic, in Nazzano, a little village north of Rome.
He specialized on construction methodology of ancient mosaics and he wrote several papers about the argument. He teaches conservation of stones and mosaics at Central Restoration Institute in Rome and he teaches Organization of construction sites for restoration at University of Rome La Sapienza department of architecture.

Degree in Fine Arts, specialising in restoration, from the University of Barcelona. In charge of the Barcelona City Council Institute of Culture Archaeological Service Heritage Interventions area. Has taught restoration at two Archaeology School-workshops and is a founder member of Gràpac-Cetec Heritage, a mixed multidisciplinary group split between two Barcelona universities – Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and Universitat Ramon Llull – Institut Quimic de Sarria (URL-IQS) devoted to researching heritage materials.

Degree in History of Art and Archaeology from the Université Libre de Bruxelles and Diploma in Restoration from Istituto per l’Arte e il Restauro Palazzo Spinelli. Specialising in stone, mosaics and ceramics has led her to work in the field of archaeological conservation. She is currently an external collaborator of the Barcelona Archaeological Services and runs the company Terra Conservació i Patrimoni SLU.

Professor (2016), PhD in Economics (2016) and PhD in Marketing (2003) at Sofia University ” St. Kliment Ohridski”, Faculty of Economics. Director of the Master’s programmes in Historical Heritage Management (2002-2018) and Digital Tourism Management. Head of the expert group for development of “Strategy for the Development of Sofia as a Tourist Destination 2017-2030” at Sofia Municipality. Participated in the team for the preparation of the National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism Development in Bulgaria (2007-2013) and the update of the National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism Development in the Republic of Bulgaria 2014-2030. Deputy Chairman of the Bulgarian Chamber of Education, Science and Culture and responsible editor of the magazine “Science & Research”.
“Buzludhza”: a model for attraction of international funding mechanisms
Dora Ivanova
Architect Dora Ivanova graduated from the Technical University of Berlin with a Bachelor’s and then Master’s degree in Architecture (2014). In 2015, she founded the Buzludzha Project Foundation, which aims to preserve, socialize and adapt the Buzludzha Monument. In parallel, she works as a designer at the architecture studio “DGI Bauwerk” in Berlin. Since 2019 arch. Ivanova has concentrated her activities entirely on the “Buzludzha Project” in Bulgaria, being project manager of the following projects: “Plan for the conservation and management of the Buzludzha Monument” 2019-2021, funded by the Getty Foundation; “Emergency measures for the stabilization of the mosaics in the Buzludzha Monument” 2020-2021, funded by Getty Foundation and private donations; “Securing and providing temporary visitor access to the Buzludzha Monument” 2022, funded by the Ministry of Culture; holding a three-day festival “OPEN BUZLUDZHA” in 2021 and 2022. Through the activities of the foundation, arch. Ivanova aims to develop good practices in the field of preservation of cultural heritage and working models for activating its potential.
